Shawn Cheney is an active sergeant with the Largo Police Department and currently serves his peers as the Executive Vice President of the Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association. In this role, he focuses on fundraising and community engagement on behalf of the PBA’s affiliated 501(c)(3) organization, Sun Coast Law Enforcement Charities. Prior to becoming our Executive Vice President, Mr. Cheney served as a PBA Director (rep) for his peers at the Largo Police Department from 2023 to 2025.

Mr. Cheney began his law enforcement career after earning a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from the University of Central Florida. He joined the Largo Police Department in 2011, where he initially served in patrol before moving to the problem-oriented policing unit, where he concentrated on combating drug activity and gang violence.  He later transferred to the Investigative Services Division, where he investigated a range of crimes including homicides.  In 2022, Mr. Cheney was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He currently supervises a dayshift patrol squad. He has also been a member of the department’s SWAT team since 2014. In 2017, he graduated from the Hathcock Sniper School and he now serves as the department’s SWAT team leader.

Mr. Cheney has been recognized with several honors, including the Medal of Valor, the Lifesaving Medal, and the Meritorious Service Award from the Largo Police Department.  Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons. His hobbies include golfing, practicing Jiu-Jitsu, and traveling with his family.
